Brief reflection:
  This course provides me the first chance to write blogging which is for academic purpose. At the beginning of writing the blog, I just feel this is an essential assessment that I have to submit several words on my blog. But after learning more about digital media, I find I am being interested in writing blogs to share my feeling towards different issues about the course, not just for assessment. .It is really a good platform for doing that as it allows people to comment on each other's view as well.

  The reason I choose the above one to be my sample post is because it's the most controversial topic in my blogs. In the post I pointed out that we are controlling the technology as we use them for our convenience. However, I received different  comments from my schoolmates that bring out different point of view. And that helps me to think more about the question as it includes some ideas that i haven't considered before, like the idea of active and passive controlling. And this kind of interaction is really good for our learning as it can makes all of us think deeper.

Should technology involve too much in workplace??

 

  Nowadays, many companies use technology not only for their work, but also for management in the workplace. Besides web-monitoring used by boss to his subordinates, there are more and more companies using social media for communication within the  workplace. That may be a website that allows personal conversation, document transfer, or even an online conference for the use of workers.

  With this technology, workers can work for a whole day without meeting their colleagues. It may increase the efficiency but damage the relationship between workers in the same company as their interaction is greatly reduced. Even they may have communication online, but they may not able to know each other deeply without meeting each other. In my opinion, relationship between workers in the same workplace is more important than their personal ability. If they can cooperate well, I believe that outcome of job will be much better than an individual work. As technology is somehow destroying the relationships between workers, I don't suggest putting too much of it into workplace.

Who is controlling? Human or technology?

  In the beginning of the lesson, Rodney raised an interesting question, whether we are controlling the technology, or the technology is controlling us. In my opinion, there's no doubt that we are still the controller. The reason for that is we still keep inventing technology today, not the vice versa. Technology is the tool for making our life easier and better. It's true that everything around us are about technology, but if we are controlled by them because of this, then we should be controlled by oxygen for a long long time.Someone may think that the world may be dominated by robot in future, but I think that only happen in movie as machine won't have their mindset in reality.

  Another reason for proving we are controlling the technology is that we can make change to the technology, which is call hacking. We can develop technology to hack into another one for our convenience, but technology can not do that for their interest. There are a lot of hackers in many kinds of technology, especially in the game industry, like PSP,NDS,Wii, after hacking them we can play most of the game for free. For me, I also hack "Apple" by jail-breaking my iPhone, so that I can get applications for free too.

The most popular book--Facebook

It is hard to find a person who doesn't got  Facebook in the society nowadays. Even Facebook is developed for several years only, it's now accounting a great proportion of people's life. People visit the  "home" on the right up corner of Facebook is more even than the "home" they actually live in(And I am one of them for sure).And I think Facebook has evolved from just a social network for friendship, to now a promotional platform for business activities or political issue.


At the end of the lesson in week 7, Rodney has brought out a interesting fact and a reflecting question to us. He said when we started using Facebook, all our personal information is agreed to give to Facebook for their use in any purpose. And then he asked us whether it is our big concern about our privacy or not. In my opinion, I think it's alright for Facebook to have this authority as there is no free lunch in the world. If it can't make money, then it will be closed and we cannot use Facebook such a convenient thing. Furthermore, we have the choice to input what information we want, but not forced by Facebook, therefore I think we can still protect our privacy if we are careful enough.

Personal feeling on Netspeak

Netspeak means speaking in ways commonly used to shorten words on the internet. It's becoming popular today and widely used by internet user especially teenagers. The reason is that they find it will be more convenient to speak in short forms, like saying "oh my god"as "omg". One more important reason is they think using netspeak is trendy.

I don't like using that is because I think that will affect the proficiency of English.(as my English is already poor....) I don't comment on whether its trendy or not, but i am sure there is no standard form of netspeak. If I want to express "you are smart boy" as "u r sb", but people may not understand "sb", or even get it as "stupid boy", then we need to spend time to explain it. It takes more time than just express it normally. Even I don't prefer using that, I know a lot of those terms as I meet them so frequently on sms, msn , facebook and etc.

My way of managing inforamtiion

  My third lesson of digital media is started with a series of question about how we cope with information. After answering all the 20 questions, I realized managing the informations is such a hard work that really sucks.

  

  There are so many information that I received in my daily life. For example, the documents of society stuff, knowledge from school lesson, news from media, friend's status from Facebook, etc. I think the information that I get a day can already filled up a 1GB memory stick.  Therefore, besides just memorizing,  I need to store some information into my desktop computer, which is capable of 300 GB. (but now only 20GB is left for storing further data....)

  


  My way to store information is using the hierarchical taxonomies. I think it's okay for me to use it as I used to divide different information into different categories of files. However,  there are still times that I cannot find the documents I need in my computer as I forgot which category I have located that into. But after this lesson, I know another way to manage my information, which is called tagging. It focuses on relationship between information items that I believe can reduce the chance of forgetting the categories. But unfortunately, I can not do that in my computer as it's not from apple. If i have chance, I would like to try this method.

My digital life

There are diiferent kinds of digital media and information and communication technologies i use everyday. For example, I use check my email by logging in my hotmail account. Also, I chat with my friends by MSN while I cannot see them. The digital media that I use most is Facebook because I can share my life by it easily and it also helps me to know what my friends do everyday. And start by today, I am going to use a new digital media and that's blog.


In the course EN2848, I hope I can learn the relationship between digital media and language. Also I want to know how those digital media affect our life. I believe those knowledge can help me in working as these technology is becoming popular in our life.
